About Patrick Blower
Patrick Blower was born in Brussels. He read English at UCL and then spent 2 years in New York working as an artist. Back in London, he began freelancing as an illustrator and cartoonist. He has drawn for most English newspapers and was the political cartoonist of the London Evening Standard from 1997-2003. More recently, he has ventured into animation, and conceived Livedraw which is a rapid response, animated cartoon and an intriguing new departure for political cartooning. It has been commissioned and used on the BBC Ten O’Clock News and Newsnight. Patrick's political livedraw cartoons appear every Friday on the Guardian website.
In the live Arts Space at the Ferens Art Gallery, Guardian cartoonist Patrick Blower ran workshops at the Exhibition launch day 19th June 2010. He demonstrated how to use modern drawing techniques using the Wacom tablet and pen. 100 visitors went to his workshops and experienced using the computer equipment.
Patrick also designed the poster for the exhibition and produced the Livedraw cartoon to advertise the exhibition which was played at the KC Stadium, Hull when Hull Tigers played Liverpool on 9th May 2010 to a crowd of 25,000.
I trained as a Graphic Designer in Brighton. I then worked in the toy industry for 7 years and this is where I first came across Ern Shaw's work. During my research I discovered that Ern Shaw had been a member of the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain in his 80's and attended the Clubs conventions at Butlins, Pwllheli. I then became fascinated about the clubs history and decided to find out more about, Ern Shaw's Life and work and the club. I hope that members of Ern Shaw's family will enjoy my blog and hope the members of the Cartoonists' Club will enjoy reading my brief account of the clubs history. I am very much looking forward to the Ern shaw exhibition after reasearching this very talented cartoonist for the past 3 years. I would also like to wish the Cartoonists' Club a Happy 50th Anniversary this year. If any members would like to visit the Ern Shaw exibition launch day in Hull on 19th June 2010 they would be very welcome. I would like to thank two members the club Mike Turner (Chairman of the club 1997-2002) and Peter Jacob (brother of Chic Jacob) for their help with my research into the Cartoonists’ Club history and Ern Shaw’s involvement in the club.
